Hello David, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Carved and Executed Chess Set. The piece dates back to the period from 1970 to 1979. The set is made in Mexico by a Mexican carving artist. The pieces are visibly influenced by the Aztec and Zapotec art, we can see this style in pawns especially. Use of Alabaster and other marble types are visible both on the board and on the piece. On the board we can see squares constructed with agate looking marbles as well as a marble type in borwn tones also known as Sequoia Brown. The pieces on the board are made both of alabaster and the brown marble. There are two sets of chess pieces, one of them also includes pieces carved out of agate looking marble. The set also include an individual donkey figurine with a saddlebag on it. The piece is also ahnd carved. The chess board also include fabric attachments to it'S base to prevent it from sliding on surfaces. These are very collectible souvenirs from the vintage period. The set is complete and is in good condition without visible problems. Entirely hand carved and made. Dimensions: Board 14 1/4 Inches by 14 1/4 Inches and smallest piece is 1 7/8 Inches of Height by 1 Inches of Width and largest piece is 3 5/8 Inches of Height by 3 1/2 Inches of Width Condition: The set is complete and is in good condition without visible problems. Provenance: Purchased in Mexico in the mid to late 70's by the current owner's parents. 150-250$ for the lot.
